The Indian SUV brand! India loves the SUVs from Mahindra. It gave us the first Indian car to score a 4-star rating at the Global NCAP for child occupancy, the XUV300. And, how can we forget the cult maker, Mahindra Thar? But the brand didn’t stop here. It went on to own some of the major automakers across the world. Take a look.

    1. Pininfarina

It is an Italian carmaker founded by Battista “Pinin” Farina. Mahindra acquired the brand back on 14 December 2015. Since then, the company has been aggressively working on products like the electric sports car, Battista, which was showcased at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Mahindra with Pininfarina is working on electric mobility as a viable future.

    2. Ssangyong Motors

Mahindra owns a 75 per cent stake in the South Korean carmaker. Mahindra acquired Ssangyong back in 2011 and since then has been actively working with the automaker to enhance its SUV portfolio. One such example is the Mahindra XUV300, which is Mahindra’s version of the Ssangyong Tivoli SUV.

    3. Reva (Now Mahindra Electric)

We all remember a small electric car that used to come in sight sometimes on our roads, way before global warming was such a large issue. It was the Reva electric. Back in 2010, more than a decade ago, Mahindra decided to acquire a 55.2% stake in Reva. Later, in 2016, the company was renamed Mahindra Electric and now it has been aggressively working on making electric mobility solutions. 2020 Auto Expo was all about it.

    4. Peugeot Motorcycles

In 2015, Mahindra acquired a 51% stake in French two-wheeler maker, Peugeot Motorcycles. In 2019, the stake was increased to 100% after the company announced complete ownership of the brand.

    5. Jawa Motorcycles

We all remember the Classic Legend motorcycles that used to roar back in the 1900s. Mahindra has revived the BSA Jawa brand in India. Simply put, Mahindra acquired the licence to use the Jawa name under the CLPL (Classic Legends Private Limited) and launched motorcycles in India. Jawa brand has been a good run till now.

  2. Tata Motors

The carmaker to give India’s first indigenous car, the Indica or the world’s cheapest car, the Nano, or India’s first Global NCAP 5-star rated car, the Tata Nexon. Tata Motors has been a pioneer in making the Indian automotive saga globally renowned.

    1. Jaguar and Land Rover

We all are well aware of JLR, the UK based luxury and offroad carmaker. Tata Motors purchased Jaguar and Land Rover back in 2008. It was indeed a triumph over humiliation. Ford humiliated Tata back in 1999 and just after 9 years, Tata bought Ford’s major brands Jaguar and Landrover in a complete cash deal. JLR since then has been a subsidiary of Tata Motors, India.

    2. Tata Daewoo

Daewoo, a brand that was not able to succeed in India. Tata Motors acquired Daewoo Commercial Vehicle Pvt Ltd. One thing to note here: Daewoo Motors and DCV are different brands, DCV detached itself from Daewoo Motors in 2002.

  3. Bajaj – KTM

India’s very own two-wheeler manufacturer, Bajaj bought a 14.5% stake in KTM AG back in 2007. By 2013, the stake rose to 48%. KTM owns the Swedish motorcycle brand, Husqvarna. You might now know the reason behind Bajaj, KTM and Husqvarna bikes sharing a lot in common!

All these stake buyouts have helped the Indian automobile brands to grow further. We all are well familiar with the fact that with the induction of global tech, these brands have been able to achieve much greater heights. The list is not ending here though.
